Most franchises don't end at 2 movies, unless they're Ghostbusters or Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, and even those two titles have more on the way. So hearing that Kingsman: The Secret Service is being planned as a trilogy shouldn't come as any big shock. But that's what a new casting report suggests. As announced earlier this week, Halle Berry is in talks to star as the head of the CIA. Her contract includes an option for a two-picture deal. Which means we're likely getting at least three of these things. And if they continue to be a hit with audiences, who knows, there will probably be more, seeing as how it is based on an episodic comic book.
Kingsman: The Secret Service arrived as an unexpected hit last February. And it has since earned $445 million at the global box office. Of course 20th Century Fox is jumping on the chance to make a sequel. And then some. Production on Kingsman 2 is being planned for this spring. Taron Egerton will return as Eggsy. And Julianne Moore has already signed onto play the villain character.
What isn't known is the plot. Or if Kingsman 2 will lead directly into Kingsman 3. The movies may stand on their own, or be directly connected by a cliffhanger. Who's to say at this point? We do know that the sequel is set in the United States. With Halle Berry playing the head of the CIA, it seems we'll definitely get to see Eggsy in action on the other side of the pond.
There have also been rumors that Colin Firth may return in some form as Harry Hart, despite being dispatched in the original. But he is not returning. There were originally plans to bringing him back via a flashback or a twin brother, but those ideas have been discarded, with the series focusing on Eggsy as the main protagonist. At this time, there are no details about Julianne Moore's villain character. It isn't known yet if Sofia BoutellaSophie CooksonMark Strong and Michael Caine will reprise their roles from the first movie.
Kingsman: The Secret Service director Matthew Vaughn is returning to helm the sequel, working from a script he co-wrote with his wife and frequent collaborator, Jane Goldman. Production is expected to begin next month, with star Taron Egerton moving on to shoot Robin Hood: Origins later this summer. 20th Century Fox has handed out a June 9, 2017 release date for the sequel, putting it up against the Disney Pixar sequel Cars 3.
Halle Berry most recently starred in 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past, and she will next be seen in Relativity's thriller Kidnap. She also recently starred in CBS' summer sci-fi series Extant, which was cancelled last year after two seasons. What do you think? Are you ready for a Kingsman trio?
Kingsman 2 comes to theaters June 16th, 2017
